BRIT PACK DRIVER RANKINGS: Hamilton hogs the headlines as Russell rustles up resistance

Lewis Hamilton continues to lead the Brit Pack Driver Rankings but the gap at the top has closed considerably. Having failed to win of late and with one DNF, Hamilton has seen his ranking score drop to under 40 points for only the second time this season. This has allowed the incredibly consistent George Russell catch up his Mercedes stablemate, thanks to a string of quality results over the past three Formula 2 weekends.

Russell has gone above 30 points for the first time this season, bringing him less than nine points behind Hamilton. It has also led to a commanding advantage over third-ranked driver, Mike Conway, who leads a gaggle of drivers chasing a podium spot. The most impressive climb in recent weeks has been by GP3 charger, Callum Ilott, who has seen a run of consistency propel him ten places to fourth in the rankings. It brings him ahead of Sam Bird, who will be hoping for some positive results – a race win would be ideal – during the last weekend of Formula E action this season.

The rest of the top ten is made up of young racers from Formula 2 and Formula 3, along with Gary Paffett, whose DTM title charge ensures he remains in the top ten. Potential Toro Rosso pilot, Dan Ticktum, breaks into the top ten following his recent run in Super Formula.

Elsewhere in the top 20 there has been a climb of five places for Jake Hughes, whose recent GP3 form has seen him climb to 14th. Richard Westbrook, nominated for his first Driver of the Weekend award last weekend, has risen to 16th as well of late off the back of some strong performances in the IMSA GTLM class.

Rob Garofall and Alex MacDowall are on the cusp of the top 20 too, but with only two drivers each to their names this season it is fair to say that these rankings are not indicative of their form or talent at this point in time. A string of further drives will give a fairer reflection of their status.

Who’s Hot?

The biggest improvement over the past three weeks has come from David Pittard, whose recent VLN drives have seen him climb an incredible 121 places to 133rd in the rankings. Ash Sutton has also broken into the top 100 for the first time this season following his stirring weekend at Croft. Two BTCC wins there have seen the Subaru man jump 90 places to 94th. Finlay Hutchison has moved up 46 places to 105th following his recent GT4 Euro Series win at Misano.

Who’s Not?

Highlighting that BTCC drivers struggle to benefit from consistent ranking scores, Sam Tordoff is the biggest faller of late, dropping 39 places to 164th. Another driver of repute who has dropped significantly is Mark Radcliffe, who dropped 31 places to 241st following a no-score in the Porsche Supercup race at Silverstone. Radcliffe suffered due to being an unranked Brit in the race, but fellow competitor – and Top Gear presenter – Chris Harris has also sunk down the rankings, falling 21 places to 233rd.

Who’s New?

The Grand Prix-supporting Porsche Supercup race mentioned elsewhere also spawned some new drivers entering the rankings. Chief amongst these were Carrera Cup GB regulars such as Dino Zamparelli (144th) and Tom Wrigley (177th). It is also interesting to note that the Plato family have broken into the rankings for the first time this season, with father Jason starting out in 181st, while namesake Lewis lingers behind in 217th.

Ones to Watch

A good weekend in DTM could see Gary Paffett climb back into the top five but our money is on Paul Di Resta making a significant improvement this weekend. The Mercedes man has been there or thereabouts thus far this season and a couple of steady placings in the Zandvoort races could see the Scot break into the top ten. Dan Ticktum has the potential to rise on the same bill, while Oliver Turvey will be optimistic of a good showing for NIO in the two Formula E finales in New York. One driver who is due a break though is Jamie Green. Currently in 99th, the Audi man is long overdue a good weekend. A couple of top ten finishes would certainly see a big climb up the rankings.
