Max Fewtrell took a lights-to-flag victory in the opening Formula Renault Eurocup round at Silverstone, thrusting himself into the upper echelons of the championship as a result. The R-ace GP driver took off from the start and even with an early safety car, he dominated proceedings from start to finish.
After taking control for the first six laps, Fewtrell held off his fast-charging team-mate Logan Sargeant, who was setting regular purple sectors as the race continued. Also on a charge was the talented Chinese driver Yifei Ye, whose pressure on the American in second allowed Fewtrell the space to concentrate on his race at the front. Fewtrell was saving his best pace for the final laps, going quickest in the final sector regularly as he took a measured victory by 1.5 seconds.
Clement Nowalak had a trying race from 18th on the grid. His initial climb to 14th was the result of some of those ahead of him going off the circuit. The Josef Kaufmann Racing driver took a little time to get going, finishing the race in 12th and out of the points – albeit recording his best result of the Formula Renault season to date.
Fewtrell flew in qualifying to take pole but there was also a fine performance in his group by fellow Brit Frank Bird, who recorded an impressive personal best Eurocup qualifying of ninth. His race would be over within less than a lap though after a coming-together with Australian Alex Peroni, resulting in the safety car.
